Peace That Passes Understanding: What to Do When Anxiety Will Not Let Go

If your chest feels tight before your eyes open in the morning, you are not alone. Anxiety is one of the most common struggles women bring to the She Grows in Faith community.

For years, many of us were taught that anxiety is a sign of weak faith. That if we just prayed more, trusted more, or believed harder, it would disappear. But the Bible never frames anxiety that way. Instead, it shows us a God who meets people in their fear and gives them a way through it.

Philippians 4:6-7 is not a rebuke

When Paul wrote, “Do not be anxious about anything,” he was not scolding people for feeling anxious. He was offering them a replacement strategy. Instead of carrying the worry, bring it to God. Pray. Present your requests. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your heart and mind.

Notice the order: pray first, then peace follows. The peace is not something you manufacture. It is something God gives as you hand Him the burden.

    Practical steps for anxious days

    1. Name it before God. You do not need polished prayers. “God, I am afraid” is enough.
    2. Slow your body. Breathe deeply. Scripture connects peace to the body as well as the soul.
    3. Anchor your mind. Pick one verse and repeat it until your thoughts settle on truth instead of fear.
    4. Limit the input. Sometimes peace means turning off the news, the group chat, or the inner critic.

Your anxiety does not disqualify you

Some of the most faithful people in the Bible experienced fear. Moses, Esther, David, and even Jesus in the Garden felt the weight of what was ahead. What made them faithful was not the absence of fear, but their choice to bring it to God.
